Volunteer: Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Volunteer: TAX PREPARER

Join our team as a VITA Volunteer and make a positive impact in your community by providing free tax preparation assistance to individuals and families with low to moderate incomes. As a VITA volunteer, you’ll receive comprehensive training to help eligible taxpayers complete their tax returns accurately and effectively.

Key Responsibilities: 

Prepare and file basic/advanced federal tax returns for eligible taxpayers Conduct client interviews to gather necessary information and verify tax documents  Ensure all returns are completed in compliance with IRS guidelines and VITA quality standards before being returned to the client Ensure a copy of the return is provided to the client Provide exceptional customer service, answering tax-related questions and guiding clients through the tax preparation process Maintain confidentiality and security of all client information Participate in VITA training sessions and pass the IRS certification exams (training provided)Assist with administrative duties as needed, such as scheduling appointments and organizing tax documents

Qualifications:

No prior tax preparation experience is necessary (training is provided in Mid-December and/or early January) Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with clients from diverse backgrounds Comfortable working with basic computer software and online tax preparation tools  Must be willing to complete IRS certification exams ( Advanced, and Ethics) prior to the start of the tax season (starting February 2026) Commitment to volunteer for a minimum of one shift per weekA positive attitude, patience, and a desire to help others Benefits of Volunteering: · Gain valuable experience in tax preparation and customer service Receive free training and IRS certification Make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals and families in your community Be part of a supportive team and build new skills

As a Check-In Volunteer at our Tax Assistance Site, you will be the first point of contact for clients, ensuring they feel welcomed and supported during their visit. Your primary role is to manage the check-in process efficiently, guiding clients to the services they need. By helping create a smooth and professional experience, you play a key role in reducing the stress often associated with tax preparation.


Duties & Responsibilities

Welcome clients warmly and answer any initial questions they may have. Assist clients in signing in and completing necessary forms or documentation. Notify case managers or team members when clients arrive. Organize and maintain the intake area to ensure a steady and efficient flow. Assist with administrative tasks, including filing, organizing, and data entry. Respect and uphold confidentiality of all client information.


What Makes a Successful Volunteer? Friendly and approachable demeanor with strong interpersonal and communication skills. Attention to detail and ability to follow intake protocols. Basic computer skills or willingness to learn. Patience and empathy, especially in high-pressure situations. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Age Requirements Volunteers must be 18 years or older. A copy of a valid ID is required.
