Support refugee children and youth (ages 5–18) as they build English language skills and adjust to the U.S. school system. RSI English Teacher Volunteers help students gain confidence, improve communication, and succeed academically through engaging ESL instruction.
What You'll Do:
ELI Instructor Volunteer:
- Support the administration of pre- and post-assessments to identify students’ English proficiency levels and learning needs.
- Create and implement engaging, age-appropriate, and culturally responsive ESL lesson plans.
- Facilitate ESL and academic support sessions focused on reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension skills.
- Provide individualized or small-group instruction to meet diverse learning levels and needs.
- Encourage student engagement to promote consistent attendance, participation, and progress.
- Help students build confidence in communication and develop positive learning habits.
- Deliver instruction either online or in person, based on program and volunteer availability.
- Report any suspicious or inappropriate behaviors in accordance with agency policy and comply with mandated abuse reporting requirements.

What You Need:
No prior experience required—we’ll train you! Helpful skills include:
- Teaching or tutoring experience (especially ESL), strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with refugee or immigrant populations is a plus.
- Strong communication skills, patience, and cultural sensitivity.
- A passion for working with children and helping students succeed academically.
Location and Schedule
- Location: Online or In Person at Catholic Charities of Dallas Headquarters
- Schedule:
- Commitment of 1–2 classes per week
- Classes typically held during standard work hours, with some flexibility
- Occasional weekend opportunities may be available based on program needs
Commitment Level
We are seeking volunteers who can commit to at least 3 weeks of service to ensure consistency and meaningful support for students. Volunteers who can complete a minimum of 4 sessions are welcome, and longer commitments are encouraged to allow stronger connections and greater impact.
