Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Volunteer: TAX PREPARER

Join our team as a VITA Volunteer and make a positive impact in your community by providing free tax preparation assistance to individuals and families with low to moderate incomes. As a VITA volunteer, you’ll receive comprehensive training to help eligible taxpayers complete their tax returns accurately and effectively.

Key Responsibilities: 

• Prepare and file basic/advanced federal tax returns for eligible taxpayers
• Conduct client interviews to gather necessary information and verify tax documents 
• Ensure all returns are completed in compliance with IRS guidelines and VITA quality standards before being returned to the client
• Ensure a copy of the return is provided to the client
• Provide exceptional customer service, answering tax-related questions and guiding clients through the tax preparation process
• Maintain confidentiality and security of all client information
• Participate in VITA training sessions and pass the IRS certification exams (training provided)
• Assist with administrative duties as needed, such as scheduling appointments and organizing tax documents

Qualifications:

• No prior tax preparation experience is necessary (training is provided in Mid-December and/or early January)
• Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills
• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with clients from diverse backgrounds
• Comfortable working with basic computer software and online tax preparation tools 
• Must be willing to complete IRS certification exams ( Advanced, and Ethics) prior to the start of the tax season.
• Commitment to volunteer for a minimum of one shift per week
